Alternative Beauty Treatments

Have you ever booked your favourite massage or facial and then found you’ve not been able to relax properly during the session? Your mind is racing at a hundred miles an hour, and you feel restless, almost as if it’s wrong to be there taking time out of an already hectic day.

We all have days like those, and sometimes we need to shake it up a little and try something new. Something that will engage all of our senses and bring us back to the here and now, giving a real sense of mindfulness.

Complementary and alternative therapies typically take a holistic approach to your physical and emotional wellbeing. Treatments focus on mind, body and spirit or flow of energy through the body and many have roots in ancient Eastern health philosophies.

So why not try something different? You may be surprised at how good it makes you feel, and you’ll be able to tap into the elusive relaxation you’ve been missing.

Hopi Ear Candles

Hopi Ear Candling, also known as Thermo Auricular Therapy, has been used for thousands of years by many civilisations, including Egyptian, Chinese, Aztec, Tibetan, Mayan and American Indian cultures.

It is a gentle, relaxing, non-invasive, soothing treatment that relieves many problems in the ears, nose and throat. It also calms the mind to combat stress and deeply relaxes all of your senses.

Hopi ear candles are hollow tubes made from natural ingredients of organic flax, honey extracts, sage, St John’s Wort and chamomile. When the candle is burning, it creates light suction. The flame's movement causes the candle's air to vibrate gently, which generates a massage-like effect on the eardrum. This movement helps to regulate ear pressure, and the warm air stimulates the circulatory and lymphatic systems and increases immune defence.

Some clients have experienced further benefits, including:

  • alleviating headaches and migraines

  • improving symptoms of tinnitus

  • reducing symptoms of hay fever and rhinitis

  • relieving sinus congestion

  • easing and preventing glue ear in children

  • relieving pain/pressure when flying or scuba diving

  • relieving colds, flu, sore throats by clearing congestion in the ear and throat

  • improving hearing by softening and loosening ear wax

  • reducing snoring by easing congestion of the upper respiratory airways

Facial Pressure Point Massage

You can choose to combine a Hopi Ear Candling treatment with a facial pressure point massage. After using both candles, our therapist will gently massage specific pressure points on your face and scalp. This improves circulation, drains sinuses and promotes further relaxation.

Hot Stone Massage

A hot stone massage involves placing hot flat basalt stones onto specific parts of the body in combination with the techniques of a regular massage.

Hot stone massage may help:

  • ease muscle tension

  • improve blood flow

  • alleviate pain

  • promote relaxation

  • relieve stress

This type of massage is beneficial for people who have muscle pain and tension or want to relax.

Lava Shell Massage

The Lava Shells owe their magic to a mixture of minerals. These include dried sea kelp, dead sea salt, algae and essential oils that cause a chemical reaction within the shell to create heat. An added benefit from the heated shells is that they give off calcium ions, which transfer to your skin during the massage. Calcium can help to firm and regenerate the skin.

An alternative to the popular hot stone massage, the Lava Shells can radiate heat for up to an hour. The continuous heat allows your therapist to provide a seamless warm, full body massage.

Lava Shell massage can:

  • boost circulation of blood and lymph

  • soothe aches and pains

  • reduce swelling and water retention

  • relax you.

Indian Head Massage

Indian head massage is a relaxing holistic treatment that uses acupressure massage to release the stress accumulated in the tissues, muscles and joints of the head, face, neck and shoulders. It aims to rebalance your body's energies.

An Indian head massage stimulates blood flow, lymph and oxygen in your upper body. It, therefore, may relieve sinusitis and stress and help you sleep better. Indian head massage is also said to help cure headaches (even migraines), eye strain and anxiety. It can even help you concentrate better at work.

At Beauty Essence, we have a specially designed headrest that is really comfortable and will enable your therapist to access your whole head, neck and shoulders.

We often use oil in Indian head massage, but please let us know if you prefer not to have oily hair.
