If your skin never feels completely clean after cleansing, it might be time to take things up a notch. Dermalogia’s new Sonic Cleansing Brush amplifies the cleansing phase of your routine by using vibrating silicone bumps to expertly loosen dead cells, debris and dirt from your skin better than your fingers ever could. Here, Dermalogica UK’s Training Executive Janine Da Costa shares her top cleansing tips, plus how to get the most out of their new at-home cleansing device.
What are the benefits of using a cleansing brush?
Janine Da Costa: Cleansing brushes have become a staple in many skincare routines because they deliver noticeable, positive results. On average, people spend about 20 seconds washing their faces, with more than a quarter of women admitting they’ve gone two days without washing their face at all!
Your skin accumulates quite a bit of ‘dirt’ on a daily basis. Things like pollution in the air, long-wearing make-up products and our skin’s natural oils can lead to a serious build-up of grime, plus other daily habits like touching your face, talking on the phone or using make-up brushes that haven’t been cleaned in while can all lead to a very dirty face! This build-up of dirt can lead to changes in the way our skin looks and feels, causing uneven dry patches, blackheads and breakouts.
Using a cleansing brush can enhance your daily cleansing routine and leaves your skin feeling instantly smooth and radiant. The soft silicone bristles cleanse areas that even our fingertips simply can’t reach. Additionally, the skin renews itself every 28 days and the mild exfoliating action from using a cleansing brush really speeds up this process.
What makes this cleansing brush special?
The ergonomic design of this cleansing brush is perfect to deep cleanse the hard to reach areas of the face, like the corners of the nose and along the hairline, an area that is often neglected. Dual-size bristles offer varied cleansing intensity giving you a professional cleansing experience every time. The silicone case makes it super easy to care for and being so compact it’s the perfect skincare partner for festivals, weekends away or getting your skin party-ready. Plus the fun, yellow colour brightens up even the dullest day!
How do you use it for best results?
Firstly, apply your favourite Dermalogica cleanser to the skin – this can be a gel, cream or oil cleanser. Lightly work the cleanser into your skin with your fingertips to thoroughly spread it over the face. Switch on your device and select the personalised intensity you prefer (there are three to choose from).
Place the brush on the skin and, with light pressure, work in circular movements across the face for at least one minute. Rinse your skin thoroughly and then wash the cleansing brush and dry it thoroughly. Now the skin is prepped for the rest of your skincare routine. Apply your chosen serum and moisturiser, not forgetting to follow with SPF during the daytime. For super smooth skin, I would recommend using your cleansing brush over the Daily Microfoliant or Daily Superfoliant for clean, polished skin.
Do you have any other top tips?
I would say to cleanse in a light upward, circular motion to lift fine facial hairs and get deep into the follicles. Also, focus on any facial creases where oil collects such as corners of the nose or crease of chin, or where more congestion is felt such as on the T-zone or along the jawline.
Use the flat, smooth side of the brush in long sweeping movements to gently de-puff the eye area after a late night. You can also use this cleansing brush on the body. Incorporate the cleansing brush into your daily bathing routine to smooth the skin on the upper arms and tackle conditions like keratosis pilaris.
Finally, always cleanse your brush head properly (which you should do after every use). Rinse it under warm water and use an unscented liquid soap to remove dirt and make-up residue. Massage the bristles clockwise with clean fingers, switch to counter clockwise and repeat for one minute. Don’t forget to dry it properly ready for the next time you use it.
