Exfoliation refers to the removal of the superficial dead skin cells that cover the surface of the skin. This process is often referred to by the Therapist as desquamation. Our skin sheds millions of dead skin cells every day.
The natural oils of our skin along with the perspiration, make-up and pollution that accumulate on the skin tend to stop this happening so efficiently. So, to keep a healthy, smooth surface to the skin and to ensure bacteria and breakouts do not form, the process must be accelerated with products called exfoliants or scrubs.
There are a variety of exfoliants available. One would select a product depending on the skin type to be treated.
